Before getting started on your journey to becoming a successful architect, it’s important to lay out a career path to help you accomplish your goals. That starts with choosing the correct school that offers the specialties and concentrations in architecture that you are more interested in. For more information on the various schools, see our article entitled “List of Architecture Schools,” which will give you not only a list of accredited schools with architecture programs, but also where the schools are located, which will better help you come up with a short list of schools that you would be interested in attending.
One thing to be aware of if you are prospective architect trying to choose a school, is that you need to earn a degree from a school that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Only schools accredited by the NAAB are able to provide a Bachelor (or Master) of Architecture, commonly known as BArch, which is the degree you must earn to become a licensed architect. For more detailed information on this subject, please read our article entitled “Types of Architecture Degrees.”
Now is a great time to be thinking about earning a degree in architecture. The field of architecture took a hit with the downturn of the economy. In order to tighten budgets, potential customers sent business overseas, downloaded plans off the internet for a much lower price, or had the contractors design their plans. As the United States pulls out of this recession, though, architect jobs will be in demand. Not only will there be more and more available work as the economy recovers, but there are currently only about 140,000 architects in the United States, so there is a lot of opportunity for architects looking forward.
Some of the great opportunities available to those who have architecture degrees include:
- Residential Architects: These are architects who design custom homes.
- Commercial Architects: These are the types of architects who receive a lot of press releases since they are the ones who design commercial buildings, including sky scrapers.
- Renovation Specialists: Big renovation projects (and sometimes smaller ones as well) need the expertise of an architect to make sure that whatever is being renovated remains structurally sound and meets safety codes.
- Professional Consultants: Architects who have a lot of experience and have become well-known in their fields might decide to do free lance consulting work or even start up their own consulting firms.
These are just a few of the types of opportunities available to professionally licensed architects. For more information about careers in the field of architecture, please see our article entitled “Architecture Careers.”
